Ten Mistakes Aspiring Authors Make

Most aspiring authors make some terrible mistakes that undermine their career as authors.

10 Costly Mistakes

In this 3-part blog I want to share ten major mistakes I’ve made or watched others make and practical ways to avoid them.

1.  Compromising your unique gift: Every author’s gift is unique. Don’t compete or compare your work to someone else’s. Concentrate on developing your style to showcase your uniqueness in the marketplace.   Always remember, “you are in a category of one and the competitor of none,” according to Darren Scott Munroe.

2.  You think perfection rather than passion: Your passion drives you to bring out your best. Writing on subjects you have a vast knowledge or have researched extensively will generally produce your best work.  But we get stuck in the paralysis of analysis.  We tend to overthink.  Marshawn Evans say, “Paid is better than perfection.”

3.  Not focusing on building relationships: I’ve heard it said that we should use things and appreciate people.  We sometime get this backwards.  We use people and appreciate things.  To be a successful long term author one must cultivate a good readers/fan base.  Give quality content to your readers.  Build them up by adding value in every post.  These are the people whose faithfulness to your work over the years will bring you rewarding results. But keep in mind, this will not happen overnight.
