Where to Begin

Publishing a book seemed an impossible task until Amazon introduced Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). KDP is a self-publishing tool of Amazon that allows you to turn your manuscript into an ebook ready for sale. It helps thousands of authors self-publish their books for free.

To publish your book, you need two things: a completed book manuscript and an Amazon KDP account.

Completed Book Manuscript

A completed book manuscript refers to a professionally-formatted manuscript with page numbers, title page, foreword, table of contents, chapter titles, indented paragraphs, etc. You should submit your manuscript to an editor for a thorough check.  The manuscript will likely require one of the following types of editing: (a) structural editing, (b) copy editing or (c) proofreading. An editor will let you know which level of editing is most appropriate for your manuscript. Once the manuscript has been professionally edited, you can “publish” it using your KDP account.

Amazon KDP Account

Following are the basic steps for publishing your book on Amazon’s KDP system.

• First, you should visit https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/  and sign-in with your Amazon account.
  • If you do not have an Amazon account, you can create an account free of charge.
    • You will need to complete tax information and bank account information.
• Once your Amazon KDP account has been established you are ready to publish your book.
  • Make sure you have the following information ready and enter it into the KDP system:
    • Book title and subtitle
    • Book description
    • Book category
    • Book cover
    • Book price
  • Upload your edited complete book manuscript onto the KDP platform

You are now a published author and your book will appear for sale on Amazon within 24 hours!
