We often learn more from our mistakes than we do our successes…

Mistakes or Mentors Image

The problem is we don’t live long enough to make all the mistakes so we must have another method of learning.  Many aspiring authors make some terrible up front short term mistakes that undermine the long term success of their career as authors. In this final 3-part blog I want to share four major mistakes I have made or watched others make and some practical ways to avoid them.

  1. Not investing in your personal growth: If you don’t invest in you, why should anyone invest in you? We can learn one or two ways. We can learn from our mistakes – which take much longer, or we can learn from our mentors – this is much faster. Invest in your personality, because no one knows it all. Buy and read others’ works related to your niche and do extensive research.

  1. Not cultivating the habit of attending seminars and lectures organized by professionals in your field: Everyone can learn something new from someone else. Remember that the teacher was once a student first and that the teacher will, regardless of position or title, always remain a student. You never stop learning or teaching.

  1. Not having a good understanding of the book business process: You must be involved and understand the business side of your book. Do not leave it all up to your publisher. Know what is in the contract before you sign it.

  1. Not pushing promotion and sponsorship of your work: Getting the word out about your book will take work, but you and your publisher can come up with a plan to get it out there. If you are your publisher then you must get the word out. Take advantage of social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, blogs and the web. More than 3 billion people are online today.
